Gender and Cycling Talk at Parkdale Library

The Toronto cycling community comes together this Bike Month for a panel and group ride exploring the history and contribution of women cycling and activism in Toronto.

Taking the Lane: Gender and Cycling in Toronto will take place on June 15 at the Parkdale Library from 6:00 pm Р7:30 pm.

– Alex Legum of Charlie’s FreeWheels
– Katie Whitman Community Cycling Champion and researcher
– Lavinia Tanzim of Bad Girls Bike Club
– Sivia Vijenthira of Spacing Magazine
– Moderated by Tammy Thorne of Dandyhorse Magazine.

The panel event aims to highlight that many women, women identifying, and gender nonconforming people in the city do not feel comfortable cycling due to unsafe streets (a lack of infrastructure) coupled with a lack of outreach at every age.

The conversation will seek to unpack our city’s cycling past, where we need to go and who is missing from the conversation. But most importantly we want to discuss how we can reduce the problem of gender inequity on the streets and confirm that it is a legitimate issue and conversation we need to be having. Ample bike parking is available and light refreshments will be served.
