Fall is a Great Time to Plant
Did you know that fall is a great time to plant? Temperatures are cooler and trees are beginning to go into dormancy for winter. When trees are dormant, they experience less transplant shock and settle nicely into their new homes! Local non-profit LEAF is planting native trees and shrubs this fall through their subsidized Backyard Tree Planting Program, available to houses, multi-units and business/industrial properties. For more information, visit LEAF or call 1-888-453-6504.
Why Plant Native?
The term “native species” refers to vegetation that grew naturally in southern Ontario prior to European settlement. There are many benefits to planting native trees, shrubs and perennials, such as:
- Growing the urban forest while preserving its natural biodiversity
- Providing essential food and shelter to pollinators, songbirds and other wildlife
- Require less care to grow and thrive when planted as they are well adapted to the environmental conditions found here
- Once established, are able to stay healthy with little watering and without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides
Choosing to plant native? Local non-profit LEAF offers over 50 native tree and shrub species at subsidized rates for private property owners through the Backyard Tree Planting Program. The program includes a personalized consultation with a certified arborist to ensure you’re planting the right species for the environmental conditions on your property.
