Posted on September 2, 2015
Bridge Demolition and Temporary Replacement Dunn and Dowling Avenues
Expected Start Date: Fall 2015
Expected End Date: Summer 2016
*Timeline is subject to change. Future notice to be provided.
The City of Toronto will demolish the Dunn Avenue bridge over the Metrolinx Rail Corridor and the Dowling Avenue bridge over the Metrolinx Rail Corridor and the F.G. Gardiner Expressway. Following the demolition, the City will install new, temporary structures while an Environmental Assessment for a permanent design takes place.
This work is necessary as both bridges are approaching the end of their service life. The project is part of the Council-approved 2015 Capital Works Program.
This project will occur in several phases and updates will be distributed through Canada Post before each phase. Information is also available online. A brief overview of the phases is outlined below.
CONSTRUCTION PHASING
Phase 1 Pre-Demolition (dates and timelines are weather permitting):
- In September and October, work crews will need to build a roadway and access points on the rail lands beside the Gardiner Expressway at Dowling Ave. and beside Lakeshore Blvd. West at Dunn Ave.
- This will require some lane closures and restrictions, outside of peak hours.
Phase 2 Bridge Demolition over the Metrolinx Rail Corridor
(dates and timelines are weather permitting):
- Bridge demolition for both bridges is scheduled for November 21 and 22, 2015 over 48 hours straight.
- This work will be extremely disruptive and will occur overnight as well as during the day. If possible, residents who live closest to the bridges are advised to make alternate arrangements.
Once the bridges are demolished and before the temporary bridges are installed, motorists and pedestrians will be required to use Jameson Ave. or Dufferin Street to access Lakeshore Blvd. West.
Phase 3 Temporary Bridge Installation over the Metrolinx Rail Corridor
(dates and timelines are weather permitting):
- Work will take place to install the temporary bridge at Dowling Avenue between November and early January 2016.
- Work on the installation of the temporary Dunn Avenue bridge will begin in November and be complete by early March 2016.
- When complete the functionality of the bridges will change. The Dunn Avenue bridge will accommodate vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and the Dowling Avenue bridge will only accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.
Phase 4 Dowling Bridge Demolition over the F.G. Gardiner Expressway
(dates and timelines are weather permitting):
- In May, 2016, the City will have a planned closure of the Gardiner Expressway. During this weekend, crews will return to demolish the Dowling Avenue structure over the Gardiner Expressway.
- This work will be extremely disruptive and will occur overnight for 48 hours straight. If possible, residents who live closest to the bridge are advised to make alternate arrangements.
Phase 5 Dowling Avenue Temporary Bridge Installation over the F.G. Gardiner Expressway
(dates and timelines are weather permitting):
- Work will take place to install the temporary bridge on Dowling Avenue between May and the end of June 2016.
- A Construction Notice will be delivered to affected properties approximately two weeks before work begins with an exact start date and details before each phase of work.
