St. Joseph's Health Centre Update

Posted on September 15, 2011

St. Joseph’s Health Centre is eagerly anticipating the opening of the new Our Lady of Mercy Patient Care Wing scheduled for early 2012. The hospital’s new wing will give our community 130,000 square feet in 4-storeies of new patient care space.

It will be home to a new state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a new Paediatric Unit, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, and an expanded Family Birthing Centre, and three relocated inpatient areas housing a total of 92 beds.

Right now construction is progressing well and people driving by the site will see there is on-gong landscaping and other exterior work like driveways and sidewalks being completed on the grounds. Sod has been laid on the west and north sides of the building, and shrubs, small trees and perennials have been planted as well. The surface parking and drop-off area was recently completed with curbs, asphalt, and line painting.  Shortly, the community will see pedestrian walkways being installed on the grounds from both Sunnyside Avenue and Parkdale Road. The interior finishing of the building continues to progress on all floor levels.

For the last several months the Health Centre has been planning the move of patients and services into the new wing. Over the next few months, a profile of each team that will be moving into the new building will be posted on the Health Centre’s website.

As the move approaches in early 2012, further information will be circulated to Health Centre’s partners and the local community. The Redevelopment section of the website will continue to be a prime source of information, housing monthly construction updates, weekly photos and fast facts, along with the team profiles.
