Roncesvalles Reconstruction – Watermain and Sewer work starting July 20th

Posted on July 18, 2009

Watermain and sewer work will begin on Roncesvalles the week of July 20th. The contract was awarded to Varcon Construction and Comer Group. The two crews will be working simultaneously, one starting at Harvard, the other at Fermanagh, both will be moving northward. Construction will run from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday to Friday, and from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, as well as occasional work at night until the project is completed.

During construction only northbound traffic will be maintained and parking will be prohibited along most of the street. Please be advised that access to driveways and sidestreets will be maintained. All deliveries will need to be accommodated on sidestreets or in the temporary delivery zones in active work areas.

Starting next week the TTC will be diverting the Roncesvalles southbound bus to Lansdowne and maintain service on Roncesvalles in the northbound direction only. More information on the rerouting can be found on the TTC website.

Site supervisors and city staff will be available on site to answer any questions that folks have and to manage issues as they arise. In addition, I have made arrangements for the
BIA to meet weekly with both contractors; the BIA will be communicating work schedule updates to their membership.

If you have any specific questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me or Daphne Wee, Project Engineer or the Site Inspector during construction. You may obtain emergency service (24 hours a day) by calling 416-338-8888.

Mad Pride Week 2009

Posted on July 18, 2009

On Tuesday, July 14th I was joined by MPP Cheri DiNovo and Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission Barbara Hall to launch Mad Pride 2009.

Mad Pride is a weeklong celebration of free activities, performances and events that highlights the human rights and spectacular culture of people considered very different by our society.

I was honoured to speak again this year at Mad Pride and look forward to joining folks this Saturday for the annual Bed Push along Queen.

Event: “Clean Air for Little Lungs Stroller Parade”

When: Monday, July 20th, 10 – 11 am

Where: In front of the Ontario Legislature (Queen’s Park)

Why: Parents say NO to over 400 dirty diesel trains a day running through our neighbourhoods. For the sake of our children’s health, tell Premier McGuinty thatelectric trains are the only solution. Bring your kids and noisemakers.

Featuring a musical performance by children’s entertainers, Rob and Soli of Alistair Ant Productions.

For more information, go to http://www.cleantrain.caand register through the Clean Train Facebook site to the”Clean Air for Little Lungs Stroller Parade” invitation list to RSVP.

Please support the Clean Train Coalition’s “Clean Air for Little Lungs Stroller Parade” as research has proven that diesel emissions can impair lung development and lung capacity in children, decrease school children’s ability to learn and retain information and increase the incidence of childhood asthma

The recent Air Assessment Report by Metrolinx admits that this GSSE/UPRL diesel corridor expansion will emit nitrous oxide levels far beyond legal limitations. There are 96 schools, 40 daycare centers, and 4 long term care facilities ( including one chronic respiratory care hospital) within 300 meters of this expansion whose school children and elderly residents will be negatively affected by these tonnes of nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions. Children are particularly vulnerable due to the small particulate NOx matter impairing the growth of their lungs and diminishing their future lung capacity.

Come and protect the future health of your children!
