Posted on April 11, 2008

Please join me at the Open House for the new Sorauren Park Fieldhouse! City staff, community members and my office has been working very hard to get this site ready for tours of the new facility. See how the inside has been transformed, learn more about programming and meeting space, sign up to be a volunteer at the spring planting/landscaping day and get involved in other park events. For information about Sorauren Park activities and the Fieldhouse visit: www.SoraurenPark.com or please contact my office.

Date: Saturday, April 19

Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Location: 50 Wabash Ave. (south of Dundas Street West, west of Lansdowne Avenue)

The open house coincides with my annual Environment Day on Wabash Avenue, right outside the Fieldhouse. Come by, meet your neighbours, drop off hazardous materials and old electronics for proper disposal; pick up free compost; and learn more about City environmental initiatives.

New this year!

Due to popular demand, I have arranged for three extra compost locations: Baird Park, Masaryk Cowan Community Centre and 25 West Lodge (off of Seaforth Avenue). The compost is free and will be available for pick up as of 10am on Saturday April 19th .

In addition, April 19th is the City of Toronto’s Annual Community Clean up. Please don’t for get to register by April 11 by going online at http://www.toronto.ca/litter/clean-up/signup.htm or calling 416-392-7899.

I look forward to seeing you all.

See attached flyers for details on both events.

1540 Bloor Street West Community Consultation Meeting

Posted on April 11, 2008

I would like to thank all of you who attended the 1540 Bloor Street West community consultation meeting on Tuesday April 8th, 2008 at the Lithuanian House, 1573 Bloor Street West. Over two hundred of you (!) came out to show support for the neighbourhood, many with comments, questions and concerns regarding the proposed development at the northwest corner of Bloor Street West and Dundas Street West.

I especially want to thank the Friends of Dundas and Bloor, the ad hoc committee that was formed after I held a community pre-consulation for this site in May of last year. Their work to date has been a huge asset for the community, for the City’s Planning department, and my office. If you would like to find out more about their amazing contributions, please visit their website at www.dundasandbloor.ca

I have attached a record of comments and questions that arose at the meeting, as well as responses from the developer’s team (Tas DesignBuild), the City’s Planning Depart, staff from Traffic Planning from the City, and myself.Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Thank you to all those who participate in Earth Hour this year!

Posted on April 11, 2008

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Bloor by Park BIA , the Liberty Village BIA, the Parkdale Village BIA, the Roncesvalles BIA, the Parkdale RA, the Roncesvalles Macdonell RA, Sunnyside CA, the West Bend RA, and all other Parkdale High Park residents, social service agencies and businesses who participated in Earth Hour. Earth Hour was a great success.

It was reported that consumption was down approximately 5.2% across the province. In fact, Toronto’s electricity demand dropped 8.7% during Earth Hour.

Tens of thousands of Torontonians participated in this worldwide event. Hopefully, this large participation will further increase awareness of the importance of conserving energy in our daily activities.

Toronto Mayor David Miller launches online petition for Canada-wide handgun ban

Toronto Mayor David Miller today launched a campaign to have handguns banned in Canada.

The campaign’s centre-piece is an online petition posted on the City’s website (www.toronto.ca/handgunban) which will enable Canadians from coast to coast to coast to join the call for a Canada-wide handgun ban. A print-friendly version of the petition is also available on the website for individuals and groups that wish to canvas their neighbourhoods and workplaces.

Mayor Miller is also reaching out broadly though the Internet. A short video-clip of the Mayor stating the urgency of this action is posted on the City’s website and on YouTube.com seeking public support for the ban. A Facebook group has also been started.

“Toronto continues to face unacceptable incidents of gun violence,” said Mayor Miller. “These cannot be fully addressed without a total ban on handguns. Handguns are designed for one purpose and that is to kill people and have no place in our society. Statistics show that in jurisdictions with gun bans, supply is limited and shootings are less common.

“I call on Canadians, and especially Torontonians, to add their names to the petition and tell the federal government no more lives should be lost in this way.”

Ward 14 Capital Works Project to start in May 2008
