His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in Toronto

Posted on October 29, 2007

Please join me in welcoming the Dalai Lama to Toronto! His Holiness the 14th the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, the head of state and spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient will be visiting Toronto during the week of October 29th 2007. To commemorate his visit, to honour his work and to recognize the over 4000 Tibetans living in South Parkdale I have been working with MP Peggy Nash and MPP Cheri Di Novo to name a greenspace in Ward 14 in his honour. It has been proposed that the HOPE community garden (adjacent to Mazaryk Cowan Community Centre) take on his Holiness’ name. Parks has agreed to support this request and will provide us with a plaque to be erected at the park in the coming weeks. Details of the unveiling will be posted on my blog.

JobStart – Career Action for Newcomers

Posted on October 29, 2007

At the most recent meeting of the Parkdale Roundtable my staff met with JobStart. This is a great free job search program that can help internationally trained professionals realize their employment goals. This flexible program will enhance skills, which include, but are not limited to effective cover letter and resume writing, interview practice and coaching, networking opportunities, cold calling experience, business communication and exposure to Canadian workplace culture. JobStart also provides guidance through the accreditation process and job search workshops to facilitate placements and/or employment. I look forward to working with JobStart and connecting them with newcomers of Ward 14. To find out more, please visit http://www.jobstart-cawl.org
