Jane's Walk: Parkdale Community Walk

Jane’s Walk is the street-level celebration of Jane Jacobs’ legacy that combines the simple act of walking with personal observations, urban history and local lore as a means of knitting people together into strong and resourceful communities. Jane’s Walk seeks to increase resident engagement in planning processes by connecting residents with others who share concerns and hopes for their communities. It also aids in the process of getting people out of their cars and onto the sidewalks for the basic tasks of daily life, shopping, schools and work.

On May 7th at 11:00 a.m., a community walk will be guided by Parkdale youth to show case the community organizations located in Parkdale core neighbourhood, from Dufferin and Queen to Roncesvalles and Queen. In this walk, we will get to know 21 community organizations right here in this small area of Parkdale, from community centres to a health clinic to a settlement organization to a community garden and more! Some of the agencies we will tour include Parkdale Community Health Centre, Parkdale Intercultural Association, Parkdale Community Legal Clinic, St. Christopher House, PARC, Kababayan Community Centre, Masaryk-Cowan and Parkdale Community Recreation Centres, Holy Family Community Centre, Parkdale Public Library and more.

Starting at the Globe Landmark on the South East Corner of Queen St. And Cowan Ave., we will start off by introducing the Parkdale library branch and then walk in the diverse neighbourhood of Parkdale. The goal of this walk is to invite everyone from Toronto to come explore this area of Parkdale and for the residents of Parkdale to familiarize themselves with our community organizations within walking distance. The highlight of this walk is that youth from Parkdale will be your tour guides! Parkdale Community Walk will conclude at the Parkdale HOPE Community Garden and the Youth Community Garden with light refreshments and a round of debrief.
