New Plastic Bag bylaw – 5 cent charge

Plastic bags often end up where they don’t belong – on sidewalks and in landfills, waterways and even trees. When it comes to waste diversion, reducing is preferable to recycling or reusing. That’s why a new bylaw requires Toronto retailers to charge a minimum of five cents for each plastic bag provided at checkout. One way to help keep plastic out of the environment and avoid this charge is to do what many people are doing – using alternatives such as reusable bags, backpacks, bins or boxes. www.toronto.ca/5centbag
