Block by Block Toronto Launch Events

Posted on October 9, 2019

On October 18 the Toronto Ward Museum will launch Block by Block Toronto, a participatory, multimedia project that engages diverse young people in the collection and interpretation of oral histories from across the city. By training young people to interview community members about their lived experiences, the project preserves and animates stories of migration, settlement and civic life in an effort to build a more inclusive city: one story and one neighbourhood at a time.

The goal of Block by Block is to deepen relationships in and between communities through the exchange of personal stories, reflections and resources. We hope to contribute to better public understanding of settlement experiences and the roles that neighbourhoods play in those experiences through interactive programming, exhibitions, art and storytelling. We think these experiences have been underrepresented in Toronto and that there is a lot to learn from them.

The block parties will take place over the course of the next two weeks in Agincourt, Parkdale, Regent Park and Victoria Park.

The program is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Inspirit Foundation and the City of Toronto.

Event: Parkdale Block Party
Date / Time: Saturday, October 19, 2019, 2-5 pm
Location: Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre, 1499 Queen St. West, Toronto, ON
RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/block-by-block-tickets-73360086995

The Toronto Ward Museum is leading Block by Block in partnership with nine other organizations. They are: Agincourt Community Services Association; City of Toronto Newcomer Office; OCASI – Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants; Regent Park Film Festival; Ryerson University; Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre; Toronto Public Library; West Neighbourhood House; Working Women Community Centre.

This is the second round of Block by Block events. In 2017, Block by Block ran nationally, focusing on historic immigrant neighbourhoods in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Over one year the national team engaged 520 participants; recorded 30 oral histories in 3 neighbourhoods; co-created 3 local exhibitions; and co-curated an online exhibition (visited 5000+ times).
