Public input sought on licensing of Toronto's rental apartment buildings

Posted on August 15, 2016

The City of Toronto is seeking public input on a licensing framework for rental apartment buildings.

The intended goal of the licensing framework is to build on the current Multi-Residential Apartment Building Audit Program by promoting best practices in building maintenance, strengthening enforcement of property standards violations, and improving tenant engagement and access to information.

The public and stakeholders will have an opportunity to:

  • contribute to establishing goals and objectives for a licensing framework
  • create recommendations related to current challenges and/or gaps in regulation; rules governing the operations of rental apartment buildings such as maintenance and cleaning plans; enhancement of the current building audit program, including enforcement of property standards; and improved public access to information about rental buildings, and
  • submit their own recommendations for improving tenant living conditions.

The City will hold the consultation meetings at the following times and places to obtain public input:

  • Wednesday, August 17: Metro Hall, 55 John St., Room 308/309, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 20: Broadlands Community Centre, 19 Castlegrove Blvd., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Tuesday, August 23: Jenner Jean-Marie Community Centre, 48 Thorncliffe Park Dr., 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 24: Etobicoke Civic Centre, 399 The West Mall, Meeting Room 1/2/3, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 25: East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave., 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, August 30: Domenico Di Luca Community Recreation Centre, 25 Stanley Rd., 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 31: Scarborough Village Community Centre, 3600 Kingston Rd., 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

More information about the review is available at http://www.toronto.ca/mlshaveyoursay.

Staff will report to the Tenant Issues Committee and the Licensing and Standards Committee this fall on consultation findings and the proposed program.
