Urgent: Save Our Community Hospitals

Posted on November 17, 2014

Wednesday November 19

Parkdale Seniors Advocacy Group, 10 a.m., Parkdale Community Health Centre, 1229 Queen St. W., Toronto – With guest speaker Natalie Mehra, OHC Executive Director.

Urgent: Save Our Community Hospitals

The government of Ontario is undertaking an aggressive plan to dismantle community hospitals and contract-out hospital surgeries and diagnostics to private clinics. In the most aggressive cuts plan that we have ever seen, after more than five years of budget slashing, they plan to close all of the outpatient services that they can and hive them off to private clinics, cut acute care beds, maternity and local care services and cut chronic care beds by as much as 50% even though there is nowhere for these patients to go.

Every piece of hospital care that is being cut from our local community hospitals is being privatized and subject to new user fees for patients when they are sick and elderly and least able to pay. We are organizing a giant rally at the Ontario Legislature to stop this and we are organizing and planning events in every community that we can. It is time for regular Ontarians from every part of our province to stand up and tell our government to stop the destruction of our community hospitals that we have funded and built for a hundred years.

Pollution Prevention Program – proposed changes

Posted on November 17, 2014

In December 2013, City Council directed City staff to undertake consultations in 2014 regarding the proposed changes to the Pollution Prevention (P2) Program and subsequent Sewers By-law, Municipal Code Chapter 681. These changes include:

1. creation of a subject pollutant threshold reporting list;
2. changes to the dental office submission requirement;
3. changes to the grease interceptor requirement;
4. creation of a Best Management Practice (BMP) for the automotive refinishing sector; and
5. creation of a Best Management Practice (BMP) for mobile washing business operations.

Stakeholder Consultations

Toronto Water held stakeholder consultations in the Spring of 2014. These consultations were used to obtain feedback and comments from the stakeholders before proposing the amendments to the Pollution Prevention (P2) Program and subsequent Sewers By-law, Municipal Code Chapter 681. Spring consultations included meetings with industry associations/franchises and other feedback mechanisms, such as surveys, to individual businesses, operators and owners.

For results of the spring stakeholder consultations, please refer to the appropriate tabs/sectors below.

Next Steps

Toronto Water is holding stakeholder consultations throughout 2014. Consultations in the spring will be used to obtain feedback and comments from the stakeholders before proposing the amendments to the Pollution Prevention (P2) Program and subsequent Sewers By-law, Municipal Code Chapter 681. Spring consultations include meetings with industry associations/franchises and other feedback mechanisms, such as surveys, to individual businesses, operators and owners.

Once the proposed amendments are drafted based on the feedback received, stakeholders will have an opportunity to review the changes in fall 2014 and provide further feedback before the amendments are reviewed by the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee in 2015.

If you would like to be provided with information package/updates or be added to the consultation database, please email or call.

High Park Buckthorn Busting

Posted on November 17, 2014

High Park Stewards Banner
Sunday, November 23, 2014, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm
Grenadier Restaurant, 200 Parkside Drive, Toronto, ON

Many people are needed to help us remove buckthorn, a highly invasive
shrub that competes with native plants. It’s a great way to make a
difference while taking out your frustrations on aggressive flora.

Meet us in front of the Grenadier Restaurant at 10:30 am, and we will go
together to the site. We meet rain or shine, but not during lightning
storms. Gloves and tools will be provided.
