City of Toronto – Contingency plan

Posted on June 17, 2009

Toronto civic employee unions will be in a legal position to strike at 12:01 am Monday. City negotiators are still bargaining with the unions and want to reach a negotiated settlement.

If there is a strike the City will maintain some services, reduce others and close some services. Please look at the listings below to see how you will be affected. Please also share the information with friends and neighbours so that they can make any arrangements they need to make.

If there is a strike I will not be able to offer my constituency office in the Parkdale Library and my staff and I will not be working at City Hall. We will be checking email and telephone messages constantly and responding to your need and concerns.

I am sure you share my hope that a settlement is reached.

New Plastic Bag bylaw – 5 cent charge

Plastic bags often end up where they don’t belong – on sidewalks and in landfills, waterways and even trees. When it comes to waste diversion, reducing is preferable to recycling or reusing. That’s why a new bylaw requires Toronto retailers to charge a minimum of five cents for each plastic bag provided at checkout. One way to help keep plastic out of the environment and avoid this charge is to do what many people are doing – using alternatives such as reusable bags, backpacks, bins or boxes.
